Teppan Ryori Mikado: A Relaxed Teppan Spot in Hakushima

The two of us went out to do some research, because we wanted to find places near us that we can recommend to guests. This one is in Hakushima, a residential neighbourhood just north of the city centre: Teppan Ryori Mikado (鉄板料理 みかど), a small teppan restaurant five or six minutes on foot from JR Shin-Hakushima Station.
It is not especially stylish. But the food was really good, and that is what we were looking for.

A small restaurant with a griddle at the counter
From the street, you might guess Italian: grey plaster walls, dark wood window frames, and empty wine bottles lined up along the wall. Look for the small sign with the name みかど in hiragana beside the door, and the menus posted in the window.
Inside, the room is small. Listings put it at about 18 to 20 seats, with four stools at the counter. Behind the counter is the teppan griddle, where they also cook okonomiyaki and other dishes. As far as we could tell, one person was running the whole place, so it is better not to come in a hurry.

If “teppan” is new to you: it simply means an iron griddle. In Hiroshima you will see it most at okonomiyaki restaurants, and places like Mikado use the same griddle for steak, skewers and small dishes as well. If you want the full okonomiyaki experience first, see our post on Okonomi-Damashii Goku in Hatchobori.
What we ate
Chicken and cheese, in a shape we did not expect
We ordered the sasami cheese, chicken tenderloin with cheese, and it came in a shape we did not expect: a flat skewer with the cheese grilled until crispy. The crispy cheese was delicious.

A salad with seafood
For our salad we chose the one with seafood in it, served in a big dark bowl to share, topped with green onion and sesame.

Meat and seafood on the menu
The food menu also has meat dishes. When we visited it listed beef fillet steak and chateaubriand by weight, beef tongue steak, and ajillo with shrimp and scallop or octopus, plus oysters as a winter-only option. A Hiroshima prefecture food-promotion site, Cheer! Hiroshima, also highlights the chateaubriand and the griddled skewers here. This section only tells you what the menu lists, so check what is on offer when you go.

Drinks
There is plenty to drink too. The drink menu runs through beer, lemon sour, sours, shochu, cocktails, plum wine and soft drinks, including alcohol-free options, and wine has a separate list. It works well as an izakaya, the kind of place where you order a few small plates and a round of drinks.

Reading the menu
Since the menu is in Japanese, here are a few words that may help when you order. You can point at them or show this page to the staff.
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ささみチーズ | sasami chiizu | Chicken tenderloin with cheese (we had this) |
| 海鮮サラダ | kaisen sarada | Salad with seafood (we had this) |
| 牛ヒレ肉のステーキ | gyu hire-niku no suteki | Beef fillet steak |
| シャトーブリアン | shatoburian | Chateaubriand |
| 牛タンのステーキ | gyutan no suteki | Beef tongue steak |
| アヒージョ | ahijo | Ajillo (seafood cooked in garlic oil) |
| カキ(冬限定) | kaki (fuyu gentei) | Oysters (winter only) |
| レモンサワー | remon sawa | Lemon sour, a lemon and shochu highball |
| ノンアルコール | non-arukoru | Alcohol-free drinks |
A few tips before you go
- It opens at 15:00, so an early evening drink works. It is closed on Mondays.
- With fewer than about 20 seats, a larger group should book first. Tabelog lists online reservations.
- Listings say there is no parking, so come by train, tram, taxi or on foot.
- Winter is oyster season, and the menu marks oysters as winter-only. Ask if they have them.
Our take
Mikado is a place you choose for the food, not for the decor. If you want a relaxed evening with a drink and something good to eat, we recommend it.
